Getting Around Easier

Not being able to walk around easily and without assistance is something that can make life very difficult. Many people in this situation find that they are missing out on a good deal of family events and are not able to properly go shopping or move around their neighborhood. To help increase mobility and improve their ability to get around, a mobility scooter can be used.

Mobility scooters are devices that are used to carry a person around. They are used indoors and outdoors, but not all scooters perform the same outdoors. These devices usually have a control arm, called a tiller that extends from the front of the scooter. This control arm can be adjusted to bring it closer or farther from the scooters occupant, who is usually seated in a captains chair that is located slightly off center from the middle of the device.

These mobility aids use electric power and are battery powered. This is the reason they can be used indoors. The range of the scooter can vary depending on the size of the battery, the weight of the driver, and the way it is driven. Things like driving up steep inclines can decrease the scooters per charge range. Maintaining a proper charging schedule is also important. Irregular charging can lead to a decreased battery and charge life.

Those individuals that use scooters find that their lives are much easier and they are better able to get around.

3 and 4 Wheeled Mobility Scooters

It can be difficult for a person who suffers from diseases like osteoporosis or arthritis to walk around. These diseases most often affect those who are over sixty, but people of all ages can be affected by mobility inhibiting diseases. To make it easier to get around areas, both indoors and outdoors, a mobility scooter is oft used.

Mobility scooters use battery power and an electric motor to allow the device to safely be used. They can be charged using a normal electrical outlet and the range varies by model. Some are able to travel over forty miles on a single charge. Some models are designed to be lightweight and so have a decreased range. Often the owners of these scooters, called travel scooters, purchase an additional battery pack. This allows them to double the range of the device, because as soon as one battery pack starts to wear down, they can swap it with a fresh one.

They have either 3 or 4 wheels. The scooters with only 3 wheels offer superior maneuverability. They are great if used indoors and also perform well outdoors, but over rougher ground they are not as stable. The 3 wheeled models also are not able to support as much weight as their 4 wheeled relatives.

The 4 wheeled models are able to support more weight and are also more stable over rough ground. This makes them the best choice for outdoor usage, but since they can not turn as sharply as a 3 wheeled scooter can. Most heavy duty scooters, which are very rugged and can be driven pretty much anywhere, use 4 wheels.

Picking the Correct Mobility Scooter

It can quite often be very difficult for those with arthritis or other ambulatory disorders to walk around. This can make it very inconvenient if not outright impossible to go places like the store. The inability to easily walk around is often the most common reason for decreased independence, but those that use mobility scooters are able to restore their freedom.

Mobility scooters are quite similar to wheelchairs in that both wheelchairs and mobility scooters are used to carry a person around. They can safely be used indoors or outdoors, which is in large part related to the fact that they use electrical power instead of gasoline power. The electrical power is much safer in many regards and because it does not put off any noxious fumes, it can be safely used indoors.

Finding the right mobility scooter to fit your particular needs, might seem to be hard, because there are a lot of different types available, but it does not have to be hard. If you first decide where you need to use your scooter, you will be able to omit many models. In the end, you will be left with a much smaller group of scooters. This smaller group can be then further narrowed by comparing features like battery life and top speed.

To narrow down the types of scooters that will fit your requirements, it is a good idea to first make a list about where you need to be able to go on your scooter. You might only need to use it around the home or perhaps when you travel. Some people want something that they can take out on the farm and others want something to use when they go shopping. One of the main things that you can learn from this list, is the types of terrains that you need your scooter to be able to handle.

If you find that you will mostly be using your scooter around your home or in areas that might have tight quarters, you might be better off going with a 3 wheeled scooter, which offers excellent maneuverability. If you are going to be using it across different terrains, including packed dirt, pavement, and grass, then a 4 wheeled scooter might be a better choice. 4 wheeled scooters can support more weight and provide better stability than a 3 wheeled scooter does.

People who will be using their scooter predominantly outdoors, might want to look into getting a heavy duty scooter. These scooters are designed to be driven almost anywhere and have excellent stability and weight support. They tend to be pretty big though, so probably wouldn’t be the best choice if you intend to use it only indoors.

Those that intend to do a lot of traveling, might wish to go with a travel scooter that is designed for just this purpose. Travel scooters can be taken apart and easily stored by most people. Usually the heaviest pieces are only around 25 or 30 pounds, so most people can easily move them around. The downside to these scooters is that they are often lacking in features, which is what keeps them so lightweight.

Finding the right type of scooter can seem to be difficult, but if you know where you would like to take it and use it, you can narrow down your options.

Heavy Duty Scooters

Walking around is often times very difficult for seniors or those who have been injured. For these people, it might not be possible to go places that require a lot of walking. Even things like going grocery shopping can become difficult for the mobility challenged, so some times a mobility scooter is used.

Mobility scooters are personal people carriers that operate in a manner that is similar to electric wheelchairs. They are controlled by the driver and use one or more batteries to power an electric motor. The main advantage to electric over gasoline, is that electric motors are safe for use indoors and outdoors, but there are many other differences that make electricity the better choice.

People who use mobility scooters are able to drive them almost anywhere, but not all scooters are intended for rough use. If you need something rugged and with the ability to go virtually anywhere a heavy duty scooter might be for you.

Heavy duty scooters can be driven almost anywhere and feature larger tires, improved suspension, higher ground clearance, reinforced bumpers, and many other special features that make these units very rugged and functional. These types of scooters cost a little more though and also are fairly heavy, which means you will probably need to invest in a vehicle scooter lift.

Let a Mobility Scooter do the Walking

Not being able to walk for an extended period of time is a problem that affects people of all ages, but those over the age of 65 are most commonly affected. Often times this is as a result of a disease, like osteoarthritis, which makes it very difficult and painful to walk around. This might not be as big of an issue around the home, but if you want to go outside or on a shopping trip, then it can become a much larger issue. Mobility scooters are used by many people to solve this problem.

A mobility scooter is a type of battery powered vehicle that can be used indoors and outdoors to carry a person for an extended period of time. Most can travel at least 10 miles on a single charge and there are a good number of scooters that have a much larger range.

Generally scooters can be classified as either three wheeled or 4 wheeled. A 4 wheeled scooter is much more balanced and stable. Typically a 4 wheeled scooter will be able to support more weight and handle outdoor use more admirably. A 3 wheeled scooter does not provide the same level of balance or weight support, but it makes up for this by being much more maneuverable. For this reason it is usually better to go with a three wheeled scooter if you are going to use it mostly indoors and in tight quarters.

Mobility scooters are very easy to use and control. Most have simple controls that are large and easy to see. Those that use mobility scooters are effectively able to increase their mobility and the places that they can go.

Getting Around With a Mobility Scooters

For people who have difficulty walking, using a mobility scooter is one of the best ways to get around. There are many different models of mobility scooter, but they fall into three basic categories.

Travel Scooters: A travel scooter is, as the name implies, intended to be used when traveling. They often do not have as many features as other types of scooters and they also usually have a more limited range, but what they lack in range and features, they make up for in transportability. Travel scooters are light weight and can be disassembled easily into several pieces. The individual pieces can then be easily placed in a car or van without the need for a vehicle scooter lift. The heaviest piece of the scooter is usually around twenty-five pounds and this makes them very easy to transport.

Heavy Duty Scooters: Heavy duty scooters are almost a direct opposite of a travel scooter. They usually can be broken down into several pieces, but most frequently the heaviest piece of the scooter is over a hundred pounds. This means that to transport the scooter, you will likely need to invest in a scooter lift for your vehicle, but they are packed with features and designed to be driven over almost any type of terrain. In addition to their excellent off-road capabilities, these scooters can support much more weight than other scooters and have a much larger range, with some traveling around fifty miles on a single charge.

Non-Travel Scooters: So far we have discussed the two extremes of scooter design. In between, there are many scooters that are too heavy to be a travel scooter, but not heavy duty enough to be classified as a heavy duty scooter. Like the others these scooters can be disassembled, but the heaviest piece is usually around fifty to seventy pounds. They can be driven outdoors, but are not as adept at traveling over rough terrain.  Their range is also less than a heavy duty scooter, but usually almost doubles that of a travel scooter.

Mobility Scooters

A mobility scooter is in some ways very similar to a wheelchair, but it is also quite different. Like a wheelchair, a mobility scooter is used to improve a person’s ability to move around. Like wheelchairs, they can also be used indoors or out. Some though are better suited for the outdoors than others.

While a mobility scooter does offer a function that is similar to a wheelchair, it uses a different platform. The chair of a mobility scooter is mounted towards the rear of the device and a set of handlebars, which extends from the front of the device, are used to control the unit. Since the handlebars are installed in the front of the device, it is not possible to drive a mobility scooter straight up to a table in the same manner that you might in a traditional wheelchair.

Depending on the model and manufacturer of the electric scooter, some are able to travel more than fifty miles on a single charge. This is of course not true of all scooters and most have a range that is between 10 and 15 miles.

People who use a mobility scooter are no longer restricted to where they can go, because with a mobility scooter you can go virtually anywhere.

Finding the Right Scooter

Walking might be something that you take for granted, but for many it is not so easy too do. This can be due to injury or as a result of things like arthritis, which makes it difficult to use your joints. A mobility scooter is one way to help increase mobility and allow you to go places that you might not have thought possible.

A mobility scooter is a type of vehicle that is used to carry a single sitting person. They are commonly used by the elderly and you might have noticed a commercial version of a mobility scooter at your local grocery store. They are used by all types of people who have difficulty walking though and some have ranges that are greater than 40 miles per charge. This allows for electric scooters to be used in almost any area.

Some are better suited for the outdoors, while others are very maneuverable and great for the indoors. Deciding on where you intend to use your scooter should be the first step in the purchase process. Some models, called travel scooters, can be taken apart in a matter of minutes to be placed in the back of a car or in the trunk. These types of scooters typically have a reduced range though and don’t have as many features. A travel scooter will be great for the indoors, but usually if you intend to use it outdoors over un-paved surfaces, you will probably want a different type of scooter. To improve a travel scooters range, you might be able to inexpensively purchase an extra battery. This way you can just swap out batteries and keep on going.

4-wheeled scooters are the best for the outdoors, because they have superior stability and balance. They tend to have a larger turning radius though and so will not work as well in close quarters. For this a 3-wheeled scooter will be better. There are a few 3-wheeled heavy duty scooters though and they have a reinforced suspension system, which helps improve its ability to go off-road.

Mobility Scooter Guide

Walking around might not be as easy for people who are over 65 or suffer from mobility related problems like arthritis. For these people an electric scooter is often the only way that they can retain their mobility and independence.

Electric scooters are often called mobility scooters or adult scooters. They can be used indoors and outdoors, but depending on the type of scooter, some are better suited for one or the other. A set of handlebars extends from the front of the scooter attached to an adjustable tiller. The handlebars also usually contain several gauges that indicate battery life and also controls that operate the acceleration of the unit. Depending on the model, many have adjustable speed settings, horns, lighting packages, and other features that improve its functionality.

Since some are better suited for indoor use then others, it is important to first decide where you intend to primarily use your scooter. If indoors, then you might be better off going with a 3 wheeled scooter, which has improved maneuverability at the expense of slightly decreased stability. A 4 wheeled scooter will offer superior outside use because it has improved stability, but it has an increased turning radius, which makes it not quite as maneuverable indoors. The ground clearance of the scooter also can play a big part in offering improved outdoor use.

An electric mobility scooter can be an important tool for people who might otherwise be unable to easily maneuver around their home or go shopping.

3 Wheeled and 4 Wheeled Mobility Scooters

It can be very difficult for many older people and those who suffer from injury or illness to walk for extended periods of time. This is a very real problem, but often it has a very simple solution. An electric scooter can often be used to improve the mobility of those who have trouble walking.

Electric mobility scooters are a type of popular personal movement device that can make it much easier to get around freely and without any outside assistance. They are very easy to control the accelerator is usually designed so that it can be operated with only one finger or thumb.

There are many types of mobility scooters available. For indoor use, the 3 wheeled scooter is usually a good choice. These types of scooters have very excellent maneuverability, which makes them great for use in the home where you often encounter tight quarters. While these types of scooters are great at tight quarters, they do have some downsides when compared to a 4 wheeled scooter.

4 wheeled mobility scooters offer superior balance and stability. The weight is spread out in a manner that is much more even than a 3 wheeled scooter. 4 wheeled scooters also usually can support more weight than a 3 wheeled scooter can. The downside to this though is that a 4 wheeled scooter has a larger turning radius, which means they are not as well suited to indoor use as a 3 wheeled scooter is.

The mobility scooter is responsible for ensuring that many Americans are able to easily get around without any assistance. They can be transported relatively easy and are used indoors and outdoors.
