3 and 4 Wheeled Mobility Scooters
It can be difficult for a person who suffers from diseases like osteoporosis or arthritis to walk around. These diseases most often affect those who are over sixty, but people of all ages can be affected by mobility inhibiting diseases. To make it easier to get around areas, both indoors and outdoors, a mobility scooter is oft used.
Mobility scooters use battery power and an electric motor to allow the device to safely be used. They can be charged using a normal electrical outlet and the range varies by model. Some are able to travel over forty miles on a single charge. Some models are designed to be lightweight and so have a decreased range. Often the owners of these scooters, called travel scooters, purchase an additional battery pack. This allows them to double the range of the device, because as soon as one battery pack starts to wear down, they can swap it with a fresh one.
They have either 3 or 4 wheels. The scooters with only 3 wheels offer superior maneuverability. They are great if used indoors and also perform well outdoors, but over rougher ground they are not as stable. The 3 wheeled models also are not able to support as much weight as their 4 wheeled relatives.
The 4 wheeled models are able to support more weight and are also more stable over rough ground. This makes them the best choice for outdoor usage, but since they can not turn as sharply as a 3 wheeled scooter can. Most heavy duty scooters, which are very rugged and can be driven pretty much anywhere, use 4 wheels.
