Mobility Scooter Road Safety

Using a mobility scooter has become very popular since they were first introduced in the 1960’s. Those who have difficulty walking find that these electric scooters can greatly increase their range and mobility. They are used by people of all ages and in many cases are covered by Medicare.

Mobility scooters can be used indoors and outdoors, and many have very large ranges. Many larger models are available that use larger tires, improved suspension, and greater ground that make them great for use outdoors. With top speeds of over 10 miles per hour, these devices can carry you virtually anywhere at speeds that are faster than most people run.

Like anything else, you must be very careful around cars and vehicles when using your mobility scooter. If you are in a car, it can be very difficult to see a mobility scooter and even the larger heavy duty scooters can be difficult to see. It is always important for the rider to make certain the person in the car has seen them before crossing the road. If you are going to be using the device outdoors it is also a good idea to purchase a visibility flag. These flags stick high up into the air to allow the device to be more easily seen. These flags are also great for use in very crowded areas, because it allows your family to better pick you out. Even with the flag though, it is imperative that you always assume that the drivers of cars and trucks have not seen you. Wait until you have enough time to cross the road and when crossing intersections always make eye contact with the driver before you cross the road.

Mobility scooters are great devices that improve a person’s mobility, but you must be very careful when using them near other vehicles.
